The pandemic was a turning point for many, and for me, it planted the seed of a dream I had long held in my heart.
2020- My friend Val had already applied as an international student in Canada, and as she shared her journey, she introduced an idea that sparked hope in me—Winston and I could apply as common-law partners, allowing us to stay together even without marriage. It was a beautiful possibility, but the harsh reality of financial constraints loomed over us. The idea lingered, though, and for the first time, I felt like this might be the sign I needed to pursue abroad my dream.
The First Step: Finding Hope in 2021
By 2021, Val received her approval to study in Canada. Seeing her take that leap inspired me, but Winston and I knew we had to be realistic. The expenses—tuition, flights, and living costs for at least three months—were no joke. Even with both of us working, it wasn’t enough. Yet, Val’s unwavering encouragement never stopped. She insisted that this was more than just studying abroad; it was a stepping stone toward my ultimate dream—the USA. Also at that time, she applied for a USA Tourist Visa. Her faith in me gave me hope.

Winston and I doubled our efforts, working harder, saving every penny, and even starting a small business to build our funds.
Then, in December 2022, we made the biggest decision of our lives. With everything we had, we decided to leap—even before telling our families.
The Preparation: No Turning Back
The first step was booking a free consultation with the agency Val recommended. Then came the long and grueling process—gathering necessary documents, proof of funds, medical, biometrics, securing a driver’s license to prove our shared address, and handling endless paperwork. Every step came with its financial burden, and at times, the stress nearly broke us. But no matter how exhausted we felt, giving up was never an option. Slowly but surely, we covered every expense from our own pockets.

The Most Challenging Year: 2023
Then came 2023—the year that tested our faith, resilience, and determination. I received my Letter of Acceptance from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. But there was a catch—we had only one month to make the downpayment. It was now or never.
This was the moment I finally informed my family. I was nervous, knowing how risky this decision was. But to my relief, they didn’t just support me—they believed in me. My sisters Vlyn and Ash, along with Ash’s husband, stepped in to help. On Winston’s side, his sister, Fatima, also contributed some of our expenses. Their support became the fuel we needed to keep going.
The Moment of Truth: November 7, 2023
With everything in place, all we could do was wait. Every single sacrifice—the sleepless nights, the endless budgeting, the emotional toll—led to this moment.
Then, on November 7, 2023, we received the news that changed our lives forever. We got approved.
Tears streamed down my face as I read the confirmation. Every struggle, every challenge, every ounce of effort was worth it. God had answered our prayers.
The Next Hurdle: Finding a Home and Preparing for Canada
Receiving our approval on November 7, 2023, was a moment of relief and celebration. But the journey wasn’t over—the expenses were far from finished. Reality hit us once again.
The next big challenge was finding a place to stay in Canada. I started searching for a rental, but it was not easy. Most places near the school were already occupied, and the ones available were quite far. Just when I started feeling overwhelmed, Val came through for us again. She introduced me to her friend, who had a room available. It was the master bedroom—the only one left—but the best part? It was only a 10-minute bus ride to school.
However, the cost was another hurdle—$900 per month with a one-month advance. It was expensive, and for a moment, I worried if we could afford it. But by God’s grace, we still had some money left, and we managed to cover the rent.
Preparing for the Canadian Winter
As my classes were set to begin in January 2024, another challenge arose—we had to prepare for winter. Coming from a tropical country, we didn’t own winter clothes, and buying them wasn’t cheap. On top of that, we needed two luggage and other essentials for our move. The expenses kept piling up, but somehow, God provided.

Saying Goodbye: The Hardest Part
By December 2023, Winston and I resigned from our jobs to spend our last few weeks in Cebu with our loved ones. Every moment became more precious as we prepared for our biggest leap.
Then came December 26, 2023,—the day of our flight to Canada. It was the hardest goodbye of my life so far.
As I hugged each one of them, memories flashed before me—the laughter, the meals we shared, the comfort of home. I wanted to freeze time, but I knew I had to move forward.
They say, “Never look back when entering the airport, or else you will cry from the entrance until you land.” my heart felt heavier with every kiss and hug while saying goodbye but I tried my best to hold back the tears, to smile as if everything was okay. Even though I didn’t cry in front of my family, my heart did.
With one last deep breath, Winston and I stepped into the unknown—holding onto faith, each other, and the dreams we had fought so hard for.
